Taylor Swift’s new music video, “Patient Zero,” had its world premiere during the MTV Video Music Awards, broadcast on CBS and MTV. The clip is part of a broader rollout tied to the expanded Showgirl project, The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, which includes four previously unreleased songs and will be available to stream beginning Friday.

Teasers released in the days leading up to the premiere teased a gothic, cinematic storyline in which Swift and Dakota Johnson play dual versions of themselves. Both characters fall in love with a billionaire portrayed by Colin Farrell, and both meet tragic ends as the narrative unfolds.

Swift, who directed the video, described the process as collaborative and playful: “Giggling with your friend because you’re twinning for an entire shoot was a new and truly delightful experience.” She added that the project allowed her to explore “the cinematic and literary genres I love so much,” noting that the house in the video functions as a metaphor for a fading, emotionally cold relationship.

Emmanuel Lubezki—the Oscar-winning cinematographer known for gravity-defining visuals—shot the video, which also features the on-screen turn by Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell. Swift publicly thanked her collaborators for trusting her with their time and talent as work on the video progressed.

Beyond the video itself, CBS Mornings offered a brief preview ahead of the full teaser release on Swift’s channels. The VMAs host for the year is Snoop Dogg, with the ceremony airing Sunday (7:30-9:30 p.m. ET/4:30-6:30 p.m. PT) on CBS and MTV, and streaming on Paramount+ (Premium) in the U.S.; Paramount+ and MTV will also carry the program globally the following day. The video’s rollout aligns with the expanded Showgirl album, which includes the single “Patient Zero” and tracks such as “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding,” and “Babylon.”
