Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother eyes a selective platform rollout after TIFF buzz
Bassam Tariq’s Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother opened in six theaters in New York and Los Angeles, marking a cautious platform-release strategy designed to build awards-season buzz rather than a wide nationwide launch. The debut, distributed by Amazon MGM Studios, drew about $199,000 with a $33,100 per-screen average. The film is Tariq’s TIFF favorite and stars Mahershala Ali as Latif, a devout hitman who, after his wife’s death, undertakes a perilous journey across Houston to protect his children.
Critical reception in limited release has been strong. The film is currently Certified Fresh at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, with exit-poll indicators showing about 60% of viewers rating it as “excellent,” 89% in the top two boxes, and an overall 80% “definite recommend.”
Strategic rollout and audience signals
Amazon MGM Studios head of domestic theatrical distribution Kevin Wilson characterized Tariq as having a “unique voice” that resonates with younger cinephiles, aided by Ali’s presence. Wilson noted that the best predictor of performance in these platform-rollouts is word of mouth—friends telling friends about the film’s quality.
In terms of expansion, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother is eyeing approximately 15 locations next week, including markets such as Atlanta, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Austin, with a stronger focus on non-white audiences who championed the film’s debut. The plan is to reach the top 10–12 markets with 30–40 screens, followed by a moderate release on October 16 with 500–800 locations.
Both Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother and American Fiction sit under Amazon MGM’s Orion Pictures banner, which has enjoyed momentum under president Alana Mayo with titles ranging from Nickel Boys to Till, Bottoms, and Women Talking. The weekend also features other specialty releases: Ha Chan, Shake Your Booty! (Sony Pictures Classics) on 540 screens; The Stunt Driver (IFC Films) on 670 locations; and a handful of documentary and indie titles expanding to additional markets.
Industry observers will be watching whether the film’s word-of-mouth trajectory translates into a measured but durable rollout across a broader slate of urban and diverse audiences, as the competitive late-summer indie scene continues to evolve.
