Robert Eggers teases Romeo & Juliet adaptation

Robert Eggers is hinting at his next project: a Romeo & Juliet adaptation. The filmmaker spoke during a post-screening Q&A for his new film Werwulf, which is slated for a Christmas Day release.

He said that after Werwulf he started writing another horror project, but it became “so dark again,” prompting him to take a break and joking that he might instead tell the story of “two teenagers killing themselves.”

Deadline reports that Eggers is eyeing Focus Features for the Romeo & Juliet adaptation; the deal has not yet been finalized, but the plan would have him directing and producing the film. The move would reunite him with Focus Features, with earlier collaborations on The Lighthouse, Nosferatu, and Werwulf.

The agreement and specifics of the adaptation remain under wraps as negotiations continue.

Werwulf centers on a 14th-century English town beset by a ravenous beast, and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, Ralph Ineson, among others.
