MTV VMAs 2026: Snoop Dogg hosts as Madonna leads nominations, Nirvana honored, and Swift’s Patient Zero premieres
The MTV Video Music Awards return for the 42nd edition, with Snoop Dogg set to host. The ceremony will broadcast live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, anchored by a nationwide CBS telecast and a simultaneous MTV presentation, with Paramount+ streaming in the U.S. The lineup of performances and honorees signals a night that blends legacy moments with new-era milestones.
On the nominations front, Madonna leads the field with 13 nominations, tying Lady Gaga’s 2010 record for most nominations in a single year. She is followed by Taylor Swift with 11, Sabrina Carpenter with nine, and Ariana Grande with eight. The spread positions both established icons and contemporary pop stars at the center of the night’s attention.
The show will honor Nirvana with the Video Vanguard Award, a longtime VMAs distinction. In addition, Taylor Swift will receive the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors. Her music video Patient Zero, from The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, will have its world premiere during the simulcast, marking a notable moment in the broadcast’s programming slate.
Musical tributes are a prominent feature, including a Dolly Parton tribute performed by Kacey Musgraves, a nod following Parton’s death at age 80 earlier this year. In addition, a tribute segment directed by Adam Blackstone will honor 40 years since George Michael’s landmark album Faith, performed by Raye, Sombr, and Teddy Swims. Other performers announced for the night include Gener8ion & Yung Lean, Lisa, Shaboozey & Gunna, and Sienna Spiro.
Viewers can tune in live on Sunday, Sept. 27 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. ET / 4:30-6:30 p.m. PT on CBS, with the show also simulcast on MTV and available for streaming on Paramount+ (Premium) in the United States. The global audience can watch the following day on Paramount+ and MTV.
A lineup of presenters includes a mix of nominees and past winners along with performers and notable figures, among them Alex Warren, Belmont Cameli, Brandon Sklenar, Charli XCX, Ciara Miller, David Corenswet, Ella Bright, Isabel May, Jeff Probst, Rachel Dratch, Teyana Taylor, Troye Sivan, and Tyla. The pacing and structure of the show aim to balance nostalgia with contemporary energy, underscored by the world premiere and high-profile tributes.
Deadline’s coverage and related reporting note the host and performers, while the broader industry context (awards, nominations, and honors) underscores the VMAs as a focal point for music-video-era storytelling and cross-platform distribution. For fans and industry watchers, the evening promises a blend of iconic performances, celebratory honors, and a global viewing window that aligns traditional broadcast with streaming access.
