Gates calls for federal AI regulations after CEO meeting, warning unregulated AI could kill billions
Bill Gates is urging policymakers to regulate artificial intelligence development in the United States, a position he reinforced in an NBC News interview after meeting with CEOs from several large AI companies who signaled support for slowing the pace of innovation.
In Meet the Press remarks, Gates said that self-regulation isn’t enough and that “law enforcement and the politicians” must shape safeguards and monitoring. He argued that regulation would entail some overhead for the industry but would not necessarily stall progress.
Separately, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order designed to fast‑track stringent AI oversight, convening a panel of experts within 60 days to discuss safety plans and the possibility of an emergency shutoff — a “kill switch” for frontier models.
On the federal level, former President Donald Trump has dismissed concerns about AI governance as a hoax and asserted that the United States already wields “tremendous criminal and regulatory power” over AI companies.
