SNL UK parodies Andy Burnham and Oasis in cold open
SNL UK opened Season 2, Episode 3 with a satirical nod to current British politics, as Andy Burnham—portrayed by George Fouracres—returns to his Manchester roots after a UN speech in which, the skit implies, he took aim at Russia. The cold open frames Burnham as a guitar-playing public figure, riffing on the idea of politicians straddling pop culture and political optics. The joke leans on Burnham’s alleged flip-flop on political timing, including a running gag about whether a general election should happen now.
Oasis enters the scene—Noel and Liam Gallagher, played by Jack Shep and Freddie Meredith—offering Burnham a chance to join the band as a guitarist, citing an opening caused by their guitarist’s withdrawal. Burnham even quips to his ally Angela Rayner, played by Celeste Dring, about pulling a tour while statements about budget and timing are being discussed.
The twist arrives when Burnham is pressed to enter personal data, a sly jab at ticket pricing and the kinds of data requests audiences have faced. After the setup, Liam and Noel reveal themselves as two Russian spies, shifting the sketch into a spoof of Kremlin storytelling about pop culture.
As the spoof escalates, Liam quips, in a tongue‑in‑cheek “spy” reveal: “Oasis has always been Russian pop. All songs were made in a lab by Kremlin scientists. ‘Wonderwall’ is really ‘Wonderful Wall’ about the Berlin Wall.” The line is kept short in the public-facing clip but functions as a quick bite that undercuts the band’s national branding with absurdity.
The routine culminates in a running gag about Burnham’s erratic stance on election timing, with the mock‑confrontation resolving as he orders the “Russian Mancs” to leave Britain and return to Oasis, closing the segment with a cheeky political-footnote. The joke leans into the idea of performers as agents in spin and public perception, rather than as serious political actors.
Beyond the sketch, the episode features Amelia Dimoldenberg hosting the UK edition, continuing SNL UK’s mix of celebrity impersonations and topical satire. The cast lineup for Season 2 includes Hammed Animashaun, Ayoade Bamgboye, Larry Dean, Celeste Dring, George Fouracres, Ania Magliano, Annabel Marlow, Al Nash, Jack Shep, Emma Sidi, and Paddy Young, with Freddie Meredith marking his debut. SNL UK is produced by Universal Television Alternative Studio’s UK unit and Broadway Video, with Lorne Michaels as executive producer and James Longman as lead producer.
