Outkast sues Ovrkast over nearly identical name in trademark dispute
Outkast filed a lawsuit in Georgia on September 16 against Ovrkast, alleging trademark infringement, unfair competition, and breach of contract. The suit, brought by High Schoolers LLC, argues that Silas Wilson’s name is nearly identical to Outkast and could mislead the public about a connection to the duo. The complaint notes an existing agreement that would have Ovrkast discontinue his current alias and adopt the name Overkxst.
The defendant, known online as Ovrkast, responded on social media with mixed messages. An Instagram caption stated, “I wasn’t even thinking about Outkast.” He also tweeted about personal emotional and mental challenges related to the situation and framed himself as the newer and younger artist navigating the path forward.
The filing references a 2025 Rolling Stone interview in which Ovrkast acknowledged ongoing accusations that he copied the name. The complaint also recalls a 2024 dispute in which Outkast sued EDM duo ATLiens, the suit of which was settled earlier this year.
Pitchfork notes that the story was updated to include Ovrkast’s Sept. 23 tweet reacting to the news.
